Lions’ Park Music Event to Benefit Burn Victim

The Berlin Lions Club is here to serve, a quality shared by Holmes County residents.  When we heard about Joel Troyer we knew the community would want to lend a helping hand.  Joel, a local five-year-old, was scalded over more than a third of his body when he fell into a pot of near-boiling broth in early April. To help with his medical expenses a free-will offering will be taken during the music at the upcoming Berlin Park event on June 29th.  Please come and help us show love and support to Joel and his family.

The 2013 Art and Music Fest sponsored by The Berlin Lions, promises to be a fun-filled time with local artists and crafters (including wood carving by Joel’s family) opening at 10:00 AM.  Local amateur pit masters will begin serving a mouth-watering variety of ribs from 11:00 till 2:00 and the public will decide the winner.  Local musicians including David and Lee, Forever Young, Floyd Mullet and more, will be singing in the afternoon and early evening.

The Lions will serve BBQ burgers and dogs, beans, noodles, fruit and other tasty treats. Admission is free. Bring your own lawn chairs or blankets.

First Park Event of 2013

The Berlin Lions have set June 29th as this year’s Bluegrass/Country/Gospel Music Festival at the park.  An Arts and Crafts Fair will begin the day, opening at 10:00 AM. A non-commercial rib cook-off will add mouth-watering enjoyment to the event as well as provide a fun way for amateur chefs to compete for prizes! Live music, great food, and unique shopping promise to make this a memorable day.  Proceeds will benefit the Park Development Project.

Local musicians, artisans, craftsmen, and BBQ enthusiasts interested in participating please fill out an application which can be downloaded from this site. Call Mary Ellen at 330-231-6444 with questions.

Volleyball, Music, and Chicken

Amish volleyball tournaments are not the demonstration of amateur sports you might expect. They are well-organized, well-attended, and well-played. With girls teams, guys teams, and co-ed teams, all competing for the prize (which is usually donated to a local family in need), these tournaments are great fun to watch.

Last weekend the Berlin Lions hosted an all-day event at the park. Beginning at 8 am, under cloudy grey skies and a misting drizzle the kids started congregating at the seven nets that were stretched end-to-end across the grassy areas of the park. With a skill that could have earned a few scholarships, had any of them been college-bound, the players pounded the ball back and forth, undetered by the chilly weather. With the final eliminations finished the winners were named around 3:00pm. After playing all day, a dozen or so kids started yet another game. . .just for fun.

Music performed by favorite local artists was planned from 5:00 to 8:00, along with the Lions BBQ’d chicken and Lion Doug’s most amazing beans. He had been working on them for hours, stirring a large cast iron pot over an open fire and adding a little of this and a little of that until he was satisfied with the taste.

The clouds continued to threaten rain so the stage was moved from the outdoor flatbed to the picnic pavilion. It turned out to be a perfect evening. No hot sun and almost no rain. The crowds brought their own lawn chairs and blankets. Some sat at picnic tables scattered about. Kids played on the nearby swings. And everyone got a chance, once again, to experience what it is about living in Holmes County that makes it a one of a kind place to live

Park Events 2012

As Berlin moves forward in developing the park, there are several events planned for the summer months, so mark your calendars for the following:

To start off the festivities will be the Bluegrass in the Park event on Saturday, June 23 from 2-8 pm. Bring your blankets and lawn chairs, sit back, relax, and enjoy an evening with your neighbors listening to bluegrass music and eating hot dogs, funnel cakes, homemade ice-cream, kettle corn and more.

On August 11th John Schmid and several other local groups will be entertaining the community with music. Volleyball and corn hole tournaments will be taking place throughout the day. The Lions will be serving BBQ chicken with concessions set up with a variety of food items.

On Saturday, September 15th from 5-8pm, the Lions will host the Second Annual Party in the Park which promises to be fun for the whole family.

More details will be posted on these events as they become available.

Park Plans On Display

On April 19th the Berlin Lions served cookies and coffee to those who stopped by the community building to see the park development plans. With only positive feedback on the plans, all the hard work done by the club and Matt Kellogg of Grasshopper Group has been worth the effort! The plans will be on display at German Village for those who missed the first reveal on the 19th.  Or click on the following link:  park plan

Kellogg is donating his time and resources toward the initial designs for the park and interest from local residents has been high with more than one offering their help in their own areas of expertise.

Several park events are in the planning stages for this summer with one in June, one in August and one in September. More details will be posted to this site as they become available.

Trees

Mature Dawn Redwood

Several weeks ago the Berlin Lions purchased trees for planting along the northwest border of the park. These are the first since the Park Development Project has gotten underway and even though they are barely noticeable to the average observer, they are a tangible indication of the dedication and commitment the Lions have to see this project through to its completion. Junipers, arborvitae and dawn redwoods, staggered to create interest as well as a defined border, were placed by Grasshopper, a local landscaping company. While the trees are small now, it is easy to imagine how beautiful they will be when they are mature. Since they are west of the park they will provide a perfect sunshade for evening concerts as well as a beautiful backdrop for the amphitheater seating area.

First Annual Party in the Park

Before the advent of the internet, television, and the general busyness of life, parks in small-town America were a place where friends and neighbors came together to visit and relax on warm summer nights. Sometimes the fun of rural living still shows itself, as it did at Berlin’s Party in the Park on August 27th.

BBQ chicken and grilled hotdogs were served by the Berlin Lions Club while music by local artists, High Country, Liberated For Him, Salt Creek Inc, and Paul Marner, played in the background. Area residents brought their lawn chairs and relaxed on the hill below the park’s pavilion, visiting with each other and enjoying the beautiful weather while their children played on the new swing set donated by Kauffman Lawn Furniture. Jaimee’ Miller and Sue Kauffman painted faces, turning kids into tigers, bunnies, princesses, and pirates and a big, friendly lion worked the crowd, bringing forth laughter with his antics and tomfoolery.

The David Shetler family arrived by tractor, pulling a trailer with enough homemade ice-cream for everyone, and Perry Miller made mouth-watering kettle corn, seasoned with salt and sugar, over an open fire in a huge covered pot.

Nearby neighbor Leon Stutzman won the raffle for the shiny, red bike which sat proudly on display. A local shop, Hiland Bikes, provided the prize at a greatly reduced cost to the club.

The Party in the Park began with the Berlin Lions Club, whose focus for the next few years will be developing the park from beautiful, but mostly empty acreage, into a place local residents, as well as visitors, can use and enjoy. The gathering was meant to bring awareness of the Berlin club, Lions Clubs International, and the park and its potential for development to the folks living in and around Berlin. With over three hundred and fifty attending, that goal is well on its way to being met.

With the success of the evening evident, the Berlin Lions are hoping to make the Party in the Park an annual event. Enjoying an evening of music, food, and reconnecting reassure us that the simple pleasures of life inherent in a town like Berlin are not a thing of the past

Berlin Community Park “Party in the Park”

Join us on Saturday, August 27th from 4:30pm – 8:30pm, for Berlin’s “Party in the Park”. The Party In The Park will be a fun time for anyone who enjoys food, music, and a warm summer night so bring your lawn chairs and blankets and prepare for a relaxing evening with friends and neighbors. The Berlin Community Park is located due south of the grade school on Elm Street. CLICK HERE to see a map of the park area. The beautiful acreage remains largely unused and vacant. The Berlin Lions Club has made the Park Development Project a primary focus and is hosting the party in order to increase awareness in the community of the untapped potential for a great park in Berlin. To kick-off the park campaign, the Lions Club will serve BBQ chicken quarters, hotdogs, chips and cold drinks, for a donation. Homemade ice-cream and kettle corn will also be available. Music by local musicians and singers will include Salt Creek Inc., Liberated For Him, High Country, and Paul Marner. A furry, friendly Lion will be on hand with balloons for the kids.

A Raffle will he held for a bicycle give-away. The bicycle is from Hiland Bikes and is on display at the German Village lobby. The raffle winner may choose from a men’s or ladies’ bike. Raffle tickets are $1 each or 5 for $6. Tickets may be purchased at Mast Pharmacy located in the German Village complex. The drawing for the bike will be held at the party in the park but you do NOT need to present to win.

Proceeds from the evening’s festivities will go toward the Park Development Project.
